I'll Be Waving My Hand, Watching You Drown

So I seem to have the hardest time coming up with catchy little titles for these posts, so I'm taking the easy way out. Lines from songs. Today's line comes from the song "Clumsy" by Our Lady Peace, which happens to be playing on my iTunes right now. See, that wasn't hard to come up with, was it?

Anyhow, Kim, thanks for your concern, but Murphy has not eaten me (yet). Schedule changes at work have had me buried on the overnight shift for the past five weeks. I have one more week of mids to go before I see the light of day again. We usually rotate days/nights every two weeks, so the change has me a bit screwed up. I don't mind keeping vampire hours, since I'm not that much of a morning person, but I was used to the two week routine.

I'm taking advantage of the fact that I didn't have to get up today and go rush off somewhere or get something done around here. Make no mistake, there's plenty to do around here (I need to finish mowing the lawn today), I just don't have to do it right this second. I get to relax with a damn good cup of coffee (oh yeah, I'm a freakin' barista over here!), play some tunes, and, yeah, even update this thing.

Not a whole hell of a lot going on in my world. My Chief retired at work last week. It was a bit sudden, but not entirely unexpected. Our Deputy Chief was made Acting Chief of Police until a decision is made on the permanent position. The Mayor and City Council can either decide to make him the permanent Chief or they can accept resumes, hold interviews and decide on anyone they like. I'm hoping that the Deputy Chief gets it. He's been there 17 years and is a damn good guy. Hell, the past several months he's more-or-less been running the department anyway. And the Mayor recognizes that, which is good. If they decide to promote the Chief from within, and the Deputy Chief gets it, that also opens up a promotional opportunity for yours truly. I would have a shot at getting promoted to Lieutenant, which would be very nice. I make OK payola right now, but Lieutenants get a pretty comfy salary. I'd also get an office, an unmarked car and I can say goodbye to shift work. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy being a patrol supervisor, but I think I'm ready to come off the road after 13 years. But I can't go putting the cart before the horse. IF it happens, it's still a way off.

Murphy celebrated his first month with me a few days ago. Yeah, we had a few drinks to mark the occasion. Well, I had a few drinks, he just kept nudging my arm with his big head. He's a terrific dog and I'm really glad I got him. We were out in the yard a little while ago playing ball (his favorite thing in the whole wide world), and now he's snoozing in the bedroom.

And so ends today's post. I'd love to say I'll post again tomorrow, but we all know how reliable I am when it comes to that. So, until next time, I'll leave you with these words of wisdom....

Don't let the Man get you down.
